European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) / European Network of Gynaecological Advocacy Groups (ENGAGe) Position on risk-based cervical cancer screening
ENGAGe is proud to announce the publication of a landmark article presenting the recommendations of the RISCC (Risk-Based Screening for Cervical Cancer) project, a four-year Horizon 2020 European research consortium that developed a risk-stratified approach to cervical cancer screening. The article, co-authored by Murat Gültekin, current ENGAGe Co-Chair, Icó Tóth, past ENGAGe Co-Chair, Jalid Sehouli, former ENGAGe Co-Chair and current ESGO President, Elmar Joura, who leads the ENGAGe Prevention Committee, and Richard Tóth, member of the ENGAGe Quality of Life Working Group, reflects ENGAGe's continued commitment to shaping evidence-based, patient-centred cervical cancer screening across Europe.
The publication formally endorses replacing cytology with HPV DNA testing as the primary screening method, supports gender-neutral HPV vaccination to strengthen herd immunity, and calls for the reform of European screening programmes through risk-stratified strategies — with self-sampling highlighted as a key tool to reach under-screened populations.
