Making a video of SERAP to highlight a number of stigmas surrounding cervical cancer by Esperanza

The Esperanza Cervical Cancer Stigma Project addresses the unspoken social and psychological challenges encountered by gynaecological cancer patients in Flanders, Belgium. Based on the authentic account of patient Serap Can, the five-minute video highlights critical sensitive topics, including misconceptions regarding the HPV virus, loss of fertility, and the impact on intimacy and womanhood. The initiative achieved substantial media outreach, reaching 200,500 television viewers during a dedicated report on the VRT national news and registering more than 4,200 views across web platforms. By bridging clinical facts with real lived experience, the project enables healthcare specialists and the wider public to better understand the non-medical difficulties of the illness trajectory. This successful outcome demonstrates that survivor-centered narrative is a powerful tool for overcoming social taboos in cancer care.
