Interactive webinar: Physical activity during and after cancer treatment

Many cancer patients face lymphatic problems as well as pelvic floor dysfunction after (gynecological) cancer treatment. They don´t know what physical activity to try, what is safe, and what will help them relieve their symptoms.

This webinar is designed to provide specific tips and advice for cancer patients on how physical activity can be beneficial for them during and after cancer tretament. The goal is to provide guidelines for aerobic and strengthening training for people living with and beyond cancer and tackle the topic of pelvic floor problems and lymphatic dysfunctions.

We invited two speakers, both experienced physiotherapists specialised in oncologic rehabilitation.

Prof. An Tassenoy 

An Tassenoy graduated as a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy (REVAKI) at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Brussels, Belgium in 2000. She obtained her PhD in REVAKI at VUB in 2019 entitled ‘Imaging upper limb lymphedema after breast cancer treatment. The role of echography in staging lymphedema’.

An works since 2000 as a part-time teaching assistant and since 2023 as associate professor in REVAKI at the faculty Physical Education and Physiotherapy of VUB. She is one of the PI’s of the research group Rehabilitation Research (RERE https://rere.research.vub.be/). Her main research expertise is lymphology and oncology, urology and gynaecology.

An teaches many courses, mainly about lymphology and vascular pathology, oncologic rehabilitation and urologic / gynaecologic rehabilitation in the master program of VUB and other Flemish universities and higher education institutions.

Besides this academic career, she has her own private physiotherapy practice, specialized in revalidation of patients with vascular / lymphological / oncological problems or patients with gynaecological / urological  pathologies.

 

Prof. Nele Adriaenssens 

Nele Adriaenssens graduated as a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy (REVAKI) at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Brussels, Belgium in 2008. She obtained her PhD in REVAKI at VUB in June 2012 entitled ‘Lymphatic and neuromusculoskeletal adverse side effect of innovative surgical and toxic breast cancer treatments.’

Nele works as a part-time associate professor in REVAKI at the faculty Physical Education and Physiotherapy of VUB since October 2012. She is one of the PI’s of the research group Rehabilitation Research (RERE https://rere.research.vub.be/) and member of Anatomical Research and Clinical Studies (ARCS https://arcs.research.vub.be/). Her main research expertise is lymphology and oncology.

Nele has an international research track record of publications and projects. She is promoter, jury member/chair and member of the advisory board of many (international) PhD’s in the field of lymphology, cancer rehabilitation and beyond. Nele has several active contributions at (inter)national congresses in the field of lymphology, oncology and hematology. She is a dedicated member of several (inter)national academic, scientific and clinical committees.

Nele teaches many courses, mainly about lymphology, oncologic rehabilitation and rehabilitation psychology in the master program of VUB and other Flemish universities and higher education institutions. She is the responsible professor for internships from the 1st bachelor up to the 1st master in REVAKI and the ambassador of interprofessional and intercultural competencies in the REVAKI.

Nele also works as a part-time clinician for the coordination of the oncologic rehabilitation programs and the (lymph)edema consultation at the Medical Oncology Department of the Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel (UZ Brussel), Brussels, Belgium.
